What is a school smallholding?

noun
British
  • an agricultural holding smaller than a farm.
  • [mass noun] the practice of farming smallholdings :cooperation with neighbours is the key to successful smallholding

In conjunction with Cook With Me Kids, schools in East Anglia are given all the relevant items to start their own smallholding.
Dependent on school and plot size, children can get involved rearing animals from chickens, pigs, and goats and growing their own veg, with the intention that they are taken from 'field to fork'.
Not only is it an incredible learning experience for the children, we also find it can help draw parents and teachers together to work as a close knit team.
By rearing their own food, children learn first hand about farming, the environment, food and animal welfare.
We strongly believe that by allowing students the opportunity to get 'up close' to the animals, they are able to create a unique bond and understanding of where their food comes from.

We can even help your school register as a food business and sell your produce on!

Just imagine having your own 'free range, rare breed sausages' on the menu in a local pub, or sold to members of the public!
