Chicken Breed Info....
Here is an overview of a couple of different chicken breeds. If hens are thought suitable for your smallholding, we would encourage the rehoming of ex-battery hens. However, ex-battery hens are to be rehomed without the expectation of a huge egg yield and they are certainly not suitable for the table. It is possible to integrate a mix of different types of chicken though and there are different breeds which may be more suitable, especially if you would like a 'dual purpose' hen.
Lohmann Browns
The Lohmann Brown is an egg-laying chicken. It is of hybrid origin and selectively bred. They lay at about 18 weeks, laying about 1 egg per day and laying up to 300 eggs a year. Eggs are laid daily, normally dawn or dusk. They are a very inquisitive breed of chicken. They will eat almost anything like any other. Most people buy them point of lay, which is when you buy chickens just before they start laying.
Most Lohmann browns have a caramel/brown shade of feathers, with white feathers in a pattern round there necks, and white feathers at the tips of there tail feathers. They are very friendly, and a good chicken to keep if it is a pet for children.
