How can we set one up?

Of course, you don't need to work via Cook WIth Me Kids to set up a school smallholding, however, we would urge you to ensure you've thoroughly looked into it before going it alone as it's not always as simple as it seems and CWMK will help you achieve your goal, often free of charge!!*

Should you wish to set one up with the help of CWMK, then head over to the contacts page and give us a call or send us an email. We'll happily discuss your needs and requirements.

Below is an outline of the service provided by Cook With Me Kids:

  • Land Search & DEFRA registration
We will look to find a piece of land within a set distance to your school. Alternatively, should you have an area in mind within the school vicinity, we will ensure it is adequate.

  • Husbandry Lessons
Before embarking down the smallholder route, it is vital that you understand what is involved. We work with local smallholders and specialists to ensure all children/adults that will be involved in the project understand the needs of the animals before they commit. These lessons will cover animal welfare, safety, feed etc.

  • Animal Pairing
We will ensure the land you have/we find for you is suitable for the animals you have in mind (space/access etc). We will then contact local breeders on your behalf to ensure the correct animals are available at the correct time. We will also advise you on breed specifics.

  • Arranging Slaughter
Due to the nature of a smallholding, all animals (with the exception of laying hens and milking goats) will be there as they will be part of the 'field to fork' process. We work hard to ensure pupils are aware of the process, as well as organise the slaughter/butchery.

  • Butchery Demo's
Once the animals are ready to be butchered, we can organise the delivery of the required cuts of meat, direct to your school canteen, alternatively, we can arrange butchery demo's, bacon curing classes or sausage making days at your school!
This may be something you'd like the children to partake in, or it could be a reward for the adults who have given their time, effort and care to the animals over the preceding months.

*We endeavour to provide the school smallholding as a free of charge service. However, this will depend on funding in your area.
